Throughout the building of Palm Jumeirah, developers Nakheel went to great lengths to protect the environment. For example, local fishermen were employed to relocate the fish that would otherwise have been trapped by the coffer dam during construction of the subsea tunnel.
The environmental initiatives from the project inspired Nakheel to go further. To create a new organisation - Blue Communities - that will help everyone everywhere develop coastal communities in a sustainable way.
A Charter is being developed, drawing on the experience of Palm Jumeirah and the expertise of specialists across the world to decide the necessary benchmarks. Blue Communities also works on a personal level, communicating to everyone in the region the importance of Thinking Blue to protect our environment.
